DJ Ghislain Poirier

Drawing from a wide range of tropical riddims and urban electro, Montreal-based DJ/producer Ghislain Poirier’s bass blasts through any attempt to classify his music.
Drawing on dancehall beats, soca energy and electronic intensity, Porier’s dance-driven, air horn worthy style shows he understands exactly what works.Signed to Ninja Tune, Poirier tears through new genres with his infectious bass and synth patterns, evident at his legendary sell–out Bounce Le Gros parties in Montreal, and now the Karnival events.

Unstoppable in his ability to mix styles, expand minds, and move bodies, Poirier is always moving, having been invited to showcase on virtually every continent in the past few years.
Sharing the stage with names such as Modeselektor, Diplo, Kode9, Amon, Tobin and Toddla T, Poirier had rocked events such as Fabric London, Australia’s Big Day Out, the Montreux Jazz Festival and Mexico’s Cervantino Festival. Poirier’s signature skill of linking disparate genres has birthed collaborations with soca, grime, hip-hop and dancehall DJs and MCs. These include Crookers, Burro Banton, DJ Rupture, Gyal Warrior Queen, Mr Slaughter, and long-time friends, Face-T and MC Zulu.

The resume continues, with Poirier’s skill of remixing artists across many genres garnering the attentions of publications, The London Telegraph, Pitchfork, The New Yorker, The Wire and XLR8R, just to name a few. Poirier’s critically acclaimed Breakupdown (2005) and No Ground Under (2008) were warm ups for 2009’s cavalcade of dancehall-soca-electro EPs,  on Running High.

Giving the people what they want, while providing a musical education in what it needs, Poirier is a producer and DJ who has no boundaries except, perhaps, the rule that it’s gotta have bass, and it’s got to bounce.
